Spring 2

English

Our stimulus for narrative writing in Spring 2 will be the epic story ‘Beowulf’ from Norse culture. We will be writing a ‘Defeating the Monster’ story, featuring action and dialogue. Our Grammar learning for the term will be using dialogue. Learning to edit and handwriting will play a crucial role in our learning too.

Guided Reading - Reading for Inference 

We will use a variety of texts - both fiction and non-fiction texts to enable us to apply our learning to a range of question types, and to make links between different books and our own growing general knowledge. We will continue to use text annotation as a method of exploring a text, and will build on our retrieval and inference reading skills. In order to support your child with both their grammar and reading at home, please use the following links:

Maths – Perimeter, area and statistics

We will learn about the perimeter of rectangles, rectilinear shapes and polygons. We will also learn about the area of rectangles and compound shapes, in addition to estimating the area of shapes. In Statistics, we will learn how to draw, read and interpret line graphs. We will read and interpret tables and timetables. We will also be using Number and Lightning as the basis of our knowledge to support our arithmetic skills. Pupils will continue to learn and practise operations in depth and will be tasked with using these in a variety of different contexts.

Science

Our Science exploration in Spring 2 will be about animals, including humans. We will learn about life cycles as well as gestation periods and lifespans.

Religion and World views

This term our big question is: What happens when we die? We will be interpreting different sources of wisdom and beliefs about what happens when we die, making links between beliefs around a soul and eternal life.

Computing: Data Handling - Mars Rover 1

In Computing, our Space-themed learning continues as we meet the Mars Rover automated vehicle. We will explore how and why the Mars Rover transfers data. We will understand how messages can be sent using binary code. We will experience how to programme a Mars Rover using binary code.

Indoor PE: Gymnastics

We will build our knowledge about and confidence in performing balances, transitions, jumps and rolls. We will use a range of equipment to achieve this, including the vault, wall apparatus and spring boards.

Outdoor PE: Dodgeball.

We will be building on our dodgeball skills. We will cover aiming at a moving target and dodging moving objects.  We will continue to develop our spatial awareness of other players and our surroundings, and concentrate on change of direction and speed.

Geography – Why do Oceans matter?

We will be exploring oceans, through the following questions: How do we use our oceans? What is the Great Barrier Reef? Why are our oceans suffering? What can we do to help our oceans? How littered is our marine environment?

DT – Food: Developing a recipe 

 Children will understand how ingredients are reared and processed, make adaptations to design a recipe, evaluate nutritional content, practise preparing food, design a product label and follow and make a recipe.

My Happy Mind

This unit focusses on helping children recognise their strengths, achievements, and the things that make them unique. Throughout this unit, we will learn how celebrating effort, progress, and personal successes can boost confidence and wellbeing. Pupils will reflect on challenges they have overcome, practise positive self-talk, and learn how to appreciate both their own achievements and those of others, helping them build a healthy, happy mindset.
