Children with a Parent in Prison

An estimated 192,912 children every year have a parent in prison in England and Wales and 10,000 visits are made by children to our public prisons every week.

Navigating this situation is incredibly difficult for children who often don't get the full story as to what has happened to their parent and many feel a deep sense of loss.

There are several support options for families and children affected.

Breaking Barriers - Working with families affected by imprisonment

Ormiston Families’ Breaking Barriers service provides support for children and young people affected by the imprisonment of a close family member.

Tailored one-to-one support reduces anxiety around prison, and supports emotional wellbeing and school attendance.

By providing a safe space for them to talk, play and express themselves, we enable children and young people to explore their feelings and break down some of the barriers which may prevent them from maintaining positive ties with their imprisoned family members.

Probation Family Services - Working with families affected by offending                    Ormiston Families hold sessions with ex-offenders to:

  • Establish or maintain supportive community networks
  • Reduce the impact of offending on children
  • Break intergenerational cycles of offending, including domestic abuse

Prisoners’ Family Services - Working with families affected by offending

Visiting a relative in prison can be extremely traumatic and confusing, especially for a child or young person. And they are more common than you might realise – in 2023/24 alone, Ormiston Families supported more than 60,000 prison visits. Visits can involve a whole range of mixed emotions including sadness, fear, anxiety, anger, shame and embarrassment. These feelings are all very common and understandable, but can sometimes be difficult to cope with without expert support, advice and guidance.
