MyHappymind- PSHE and RSE

Overview of myHappymind:

We are proud to be a part of the myHappymind Family!

As a whole-school programme grounded in science and dedicated to building positive mental wellbeing, myHappymind helps children understand how their brains work and creates a culture that helps to build children's resilience, confidence, and self-esteem. myHappymind also teaches the children how to self-regulate and manage their emotions in stressful times, allowing them to be their very best selves!

PSHE and RSE at Norwood

At Norwood, we use myHappymind Plus to support the delivery of our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE).

myHappymind Plus provides a whole-school, progressive curriculum, with learning carefully built upon as children move through school. The programme is designed to support the statutory Relationships and Health Education requirements as well as the wider PSHE curriculum.

What does myHappymind Plus cover?

The programme is organised into four key strands:

myHappymind – supporting positive mental health, emotional wellbeing, resilience, self-esteem and an understanding of how our brains and emotions work.

myHappybody – developing children's understanding of physical health, healthy lifestyles, looking after their bodies, personal safety and wellbeing.

myHappyrelationships – helping children understand families, friendships and respectful relationships, including kindness, boundaries, appropriate behaviour, staying safe and recognising healthy and unhealthy relationships.

myHappyworld – supporting the wider PSHE curriculum, helping children understand their place in their community and the wider world and develop the knowledge and skills they need for life.

Relationships and Health Education

Through myHappymind Plus and our wider curriculum, children learn about important areas including:

  • caring friendships and respectful relationships
  • different families and the importance of respect
  • recognising and communicating personal boundaries
  • appropriate and inappropriate touch
  • physical and emotional health
  • mental wellbeing and resilience
  • keeping safe, including online safety
  • seeking help and identifying trusted adults
  • coping with change, loss and difficult emotions
  • healthy choices and looking after our bodies
  • preparing for the changes children experience as they grow.

Learning is age-appropriate and progressive, ensuring that children build their knowledge, vocabulary and understanding over time.

Our approach to RSE

Our RSE provision follows the Department for Education's statutory guidance. Content is taught sensitively and at an age-appropriate level, with safeguarding and children's wellbeing at its heart.

We recognise the important role parents and carers play in this area. We are committed to being transparent about what children are taught and to providing families with information about our curriculum and the resources we use.

Together, our PSHE and RSE provision aims to give every child the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to build positive relationships, make healthy choices, stay safe, understand themselves and others, and thrive as they grow up.

PSHE and RSE – Intent, Implementation and Impact

At Norwood, we use myHappymind Plus as the foundation of our PSHE and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum. Our approach ensures that children develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, safe and fulfilling lives.

Our PSHE curriculum also plays an important role in promoting the Fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, preparing our children positively for life in modern Britain.

Intent

Our intent is to provide a high-quality, inclusive and progressive PSHE and RSE curriculum that places children’s mental health, wellbeing, relationships and safety at its heart.

We want every child to develop the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to understand themselves and others, build positive and respectful relationships, make informed and healthy choices and know how to keep themselves safe.

Through our curriculum, we aim for children to:

  • develop positive mental health, resilience, confidence and self-esteem;
  • recognise, understand and manage their emotions;
  • understand what makes a healthy and respectful relationship;
  • develop respect for different families, cultures, faiths, beliefs and ways of life;
  • recognise the importance of equality, kindness, tolerance and mutual respect;
  • understand that their own choices and actions have consequences;
  • understand rules, rights and responsibilities and why these are important;
  • develop their own opinions while learning to listen to and respect the views of others;
  • recognise appropriate and inappropriate behaviour and understand personal boundaries;
  • know how and when to seek help from trusted adults;
  • understand how to keep themselves safe, including online;
  • make healthy choices and understand how to look after their physical and emotional wellbeing;
  • understand their changing bodies through appropriate, age-related learning;
  • become responsible, respectful and active members of their school, local community and wider society.

Our curriculum supports children in developing the values and behaviours needed to participate positively in modern British society.

Implementation

We implement our PSHE and RSE curriculum primarily through myHappymind Plus, providing a consistent, whole-school approach from the Early Years through to Year 6.

Learning is organised through four interconnected strands:

myHappymind focuses on mental health, understanding the brain, emotions, character, resilience, self-esteem and positive wellbeing.

myHappybody develops children’s understanding of physical health, healthy choices, personal safety and looking after their bodies.

myHappyrelationships teaches children about families, friendships, respectful relationships, boundaries, appropriate behaviour and keeping themselves and others safe.

myHappyworld develops children’s understanding of their community, responsibilities and the wider world.

Lessons are taught regularly throughout the school year. The curriculum follows a progressive, spiral approach, allowing important knowledge and concepts to be revisited and developed as children mature.

Fundamental British Values

British Values are embedded throughout our PSHE provision and wider school life.

Democracy – Children are encouraged to express their opinions, listen respectfully to others and understand that everyone has a voice. Opportunities such as pupil voice, class discussions, voting and our school council help children experience democratic processes in practice.

The Rule of Law – Children learn why rules and laws exist and how they help to keep individuals and communities safe. They develop an understanding of rights, responsibilities, boundaries and the consequences of choices and behaviour.

Individual Liberty – Children are supported to develop confidence, independence and self-esteem. They learn that they have rights, can make choices and express their views while understanding that these freedoms come with responsibilities towards themselves and others.

Mutual Respect – Respect is central to our PSHE and RSE curriculum. Children learn how to develop positive relationships, listen to others, show kindness and empathy, resolve disagreements appropriately and challenge unkind or discriminatory behaviour.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs – Children learn about and celebrate the diversity of families, cultures, faiths, beliefs and communities. They are encouraged to value difference, challenge stereotypes and understand that people may have beliefs and experiences different from their own.

These values are reinforced beyond PSHE lessons through assemblies, our behaviour expectations, safeguarding practice, wider curriculum, pupil leadership opportunities and the everyday life of our school.

RSE content is taught sensitively and at an age-appropriate stage. Staff establish safe and respectful environments in which children can ask questions and develop accurate knowledge and vocabulary.

Parents and carers are important partners in this learning, and we aim to communicate openly about our curriculum and the resources used within RSE.

Impact

The impact of our PSHE and RSE curriculum is seen in children who increasingly have the knowledge, confidence, values and skills to look after themselves, develop positive relationships and participate responsibly in their community.

As children progress through our school, we expect them to demonstrate:

  • positive emotional literacy and an ability to talk about their feelings;
  • resilience and confidence when facing challenges;
  • an understanding of their mental and physical wellbeing;
  • positive and respectful relationships with others;
  • respect for people from different backgrounds, cultures, faiths and families;
  • an understanding that people can hold different views and beliefs;
  • respect for rules and an understanding of rights and responsibilities;
  • confidence to express their own views while listening respectfully to others;
  • an understanding of personal boundaries and consent;
  • an ability to recognise unsafe or inappropriate situations;
  • knowledge of how to keep themselves safe both offline and online;
  • confidence in identifying trusted adults and asking for help;
  • increasing independence and responsibility for their own choices and actions;
  • an understanding of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance and how these values apply to their everyday lives.

We assess impact through teacher assessment, pupil discussions and pupil voice, lesson activities, observations and children’s ability to apply their learning to real-life situations. We also consider wider indicators including children’s wellbeing, behaviour, relationships and engagement in school life.

Ultimately, our aim is for every child to leave our school as a confident, respectful, resilient and responsible individual, equipped with the knowledge and skills to make positive choices, build healthy relationships, respect the rights and beliefs of others and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
