Non-Fiction – persuasive writing – Come and Buy a Talking Papaya

Building on the text ‘The Papaya That Spoke’ from Summer 1 and identifying features of persuasive writing, we will be writing adverts to buy a talking papaya.  We will engage the reader using pronouns, adjectives that stir emotion, use superlatives and use alliteration and rhyme.

Reading

Maths – Time, statistics, position and direction

We will continue and complete our unit to tell the time to the hour, half hour, 5 minutes, quarter past and quarter to, as well as learning how many minutes are in an hour and how many hours are in a day. We will also find and compare durations of time and solve different problems involving time.

We will learn how to interpret and make tally charts, tables, block diagrams and pictograms.

We will describe position, movement and turns, in addition to identifying shape patterns with turns.

Science

Growing Up – life cycles

We will learn about mothers and their offspring, before learning about the lifecycle of humans, mammals, amphibians and butterflies. We will use this knowledge to identify patterns between the life cycles of different animals.

Computing – Scratch Junior programming

We will use Scratch Junior to learn a range of skills, including: creating an animation, using characters as buttons to make musical instruments on Scratch, following an algorithm to program a joke and planning and using algorithms to create animations about the Three Little Pigs.

Geography –  What is it like to live by the coast?  

We will start our learning by naming and locating the seas and oceans surrounding the UK. We will then learn what the coast is, in addition to identifying the physical features of the Jurassic Coast. We will then answer the question 'How do people use Weymouth?', before investigating how people use our local coast and presenting our findings.

We will also use field work to develop our map skills and compass skills, including using North, East, South and West in the context of our school.

Design and Technology – Mechanisms: Making a moving monster

After learning the terms; pivot, lever and linkage, we will design a monster which will move using a linkage mechanism. We will practise making linkages of different types and varying the materials they use to bring their monsters to life.

Religion and World Views – Where do some people talk to God?

We will learn where people pray and explore the similarities and differences between these places. These places of worship will include temples, churches, mosques, synagogues and gurdwaras.

Music – Pitch: Musical Me

We will sing the song ‘Once a Man Fell in a Well’ and play it using tuned percussion.  We will add sound effects and experiment with timbre and dynamics.  We will use letter notation to write a melody.

My HappyMind – Relate 

This module is focused on teaching children the importance of being able to relate to and get along with others in order to have positive relationships. It uses Character Strengths to illustrate the need to be able to see other perspectives in order to build relationships. Through lots of examples and discussion, the children learn about two key skills that will serve them well in relationship building. 

My HappyMind - Families and close positive relationships 

In this lesson, children will be thinking about their close family as well as their extended family relatives. The focus will be on how they feel cared for by members of their family.

PE – Kwik Cricket and Football

We will learn how to play Kwik Cricket and the skills involved, such as throwing, runs between wickets, catching the ball and hitting the ball. 

We will practise skills required in a football game, such as dribbling, moving with the ball, passing, stopping the ball and shooting.
