Spring 2

Our whole school topic for Spring 2 is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This will provide a stimulus for our learning across the curriculum. We will focus in depth at the manufacturing of chocolate and the importance of fair trade. In geography we will locate the different areas that produce our food and look at the interconnections between all of the different sections in production and the consequences of one element not being there. Pupils will use design their own room for Charlie’s new factory and will go head to head in a contest to create the best chocolate bar.

English:

In English we will use Charlie and the great Glass Elevator as vehicle for our learning.  Pupils will design their own chocolate factory which will then be used to write a setting description. Also this term, pupils will be tasked with writing a character description and a Narrative from a different perspective. Pupils will recap the different clauses needed within their writing and will be introduced to higher order punctuation.

Vocabulary continues to be of high importance across school. Year 5 will continue to expand their range through the use of Word Smash, class discussion, spellings, Bedrock and Vocabulary Bingo.

The link for Bedrock is:        https://app.bedrocklearning.org/

Guided reading will link with the work in English, but will also extend to additional texts in order for the pupils to experience a wider range of genres. Each lesson will be focused on a different question type and will be revisited with each text that they look at.

problem solving and reasoning will also be of high importance each week as these are vital skills that the pupils need to learn. We will look at strategies to break down questions and to understand what is being asked of us. Furthermore, we will aim to raise the resilience to tackle the higher end questions.
