What a great half term we have had! The children have made wonderful strides forward.
The children have worked hard in literacy particularly with their letter formation and blending. The children have enjoyed home reading and changing their books, they are certainly reading a lot more. If you can keep practising at home it would be great, it is really making a difference and will really help with their fluency.
The children loved our Volcano topic and have had a real thirst for knowledge. I have had questions like; Why is it so hot in the centre of the earth? The children enjoyed making lava and watching different experiments. We have painted volcano pictures too.
The children have also taken on board healthy eating! The children have been sharing their ideas at the snack table and have enjoyed telling each other how fruit and vegetables are healthy foods. They are loving making their own snacks particularly using the toaster and making their own toast.
In maths we have learned about ordinal numbers and practised counting with numbers 0 to 20. We have also looked at 1 less and 1 more of a given number. The children can confidently count forward and backwards to 20. We have also covered addition and subtraction and 3D shape.
Next term we are beginning our learning journey with Space, as the children are really interested in the natural world. We will then begin our whole school topic about Matilda. We will just touch on aspects of the story as some of it is not appropriate for young children. Our topic will largely be about magic and kindness.
Here are the targets we are working towards this term:
- To read and write CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words e.g. mad, tap, dad, bin
- To count 1- 20 forwards and backwards reliably and recognise and write numbers 1-20
- 2D and 3D shape
- Time – everyday language
- To estimate and count objects reliable to 20
- Halving and doubling to 10
- To practise retelling stories of their making
- Reading at home
If you feel your child has already achieved these you could support us by:
- Halving and doubling to 20
- Number sentences with missing numbers e.g. ? +? =10 or ? +3 =15 or ? +? +? =12
- Writing sentences using their set 1 and set 2 sounds
- Counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s
Whole School Performance
Next term is our whole school topic, ‘Matilda’. The whole school will be performing on the stage at Queen Katharine’s Academy. The date is the Wednesday 1st April 2020 at 6.30pm.
For the performance the children will be performing a rock dance and they will need a costume. This can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish to make it! Feel free to allow your creative juices to flow!
The children need to wear them on the evening of the performance and do not need to bring them into school. I ’m sure you are looking forward to the event the children certainly are.
Mother’s Day Celebration
We will also have a Mother’s Day celebration on Friday 20th March 2020 at 2.00pm, when Mum’s or a special lady in your child’s life can visit the children in the classroom.
