Summer 1

Year 2 – Sport

Main Learning Theme

Our topic for the next term is Sport. We are really looking forward to the weather improving so that we can make the most of our field track, and all the PE games we have been learning so far this year. We will be learning about different games that children have learned throughout history, and coming up with and creating our own playground games, as well as clapping games. This will link to our previous PSHE learning. We will learn about games from around the world, and how different cultures play and invent different sports.

During each week we will explore a different sport related theme: Football (‘Spinderella’ is our key text, and we will practise playing mini games of football), Games from around the World, Clapping Games and the History of Playground Games (‘Please Mrs Butler’ poetry), creating a Sports Day.

Key Vocabulary - games, team, equal, fair, score, tally, challenge, team player, winning, losing, rules, technique

In Maths this term Year 2 will continue to build their number skills from throughout the year, completing weekly Number and Lightning quizzes to keep their arithmetic fluency building. We are focussing on addition and subtraction with renaming, and building our partitioning skills and knowledge of number bonds. The 2, 5 and 10 times table are really important, and we are getting very good at saying the associated division facts (for example ‘4 x 10 is 40, so 40 ÷ 10 is 4’). Collecting data about people’s favourite games will help us to record using tally marks, counting in 2s. 5s and 10s. We will develop fluency of addition and subtraction bonds to 10, 20 and 100, as well as multiplication and division to develop mental arithmetic methods.

We will also be learning about measuring length and height using centimetres and metres, as well as comparing length and height of different objects. The children will learn how to use positional and directional vocabulary, for instance different turns.

Key Vocabulary - addition, subtraction, minus, division, multiplication, difference, sum, total, number facts, number bonds, greater than, less than, tens and ones, rename, partition, length, height, compare, order, problem solve, length, height, centimetre, metre, turn, quarter turn, half turn, full turn, clockwise, anti clockwise, forwards, backwards

In English this term Year 2 will be focusing on non-fiction texts, biographies and poetry linked to sports and sports men and women. We will think about how a non-fiction text is different from the stories that we have looked at in previous terms. Our poetry collection (packed full of songs about movement, sport and dance) and first text ‘Spinderella’ are written by one of our favourite authors; Julia Donaldson. The children are very keen on her work, and can make good links between her books and other stories that they know and have read. We are continuing to read and understand adjectives and adverbs to make our writing exciting, as well as identifying them in our reading.

Key Vocabulary - adjective, verb, noun, adverb, exclamation, command, question, poetry, rhyme

This term in Science we will be looking at plants as well as the human life span. We will be thinking about how humans and animals grow and change over time, and how they keep healthy by eating different foods. We will also begin to explore food chains, and habitats of different animals. We will attempt to grow some beans, seeds and cress to compare how different plants grow, and what they need to be able to do this.

Key Vocabulary - food chain, materials, properties, rubber, plastic, wood, stone, metal, human

Design and Technology

We will explore, design and create different sporting equipment using a variety of materials and joining techniques.

In PSHE we will be looking at the internet and how it helps us. We will be learning the importance of not sharing personal information online and what do if we feel upset or uncomfortable. We will be looking at the difference between secrets and surprises. We will begin to look at privacy and learning the correct vocabulary for body parts. We will also be looking closely at road safety.

Through our core biography texts, we will look at the history of sports and themes such as the Olympics.

This half term year 2 will be exploring Bee Bots. The children will physically assume the role of programmers and programme a bee bot to follow instructions. Children will then work with peers to programme the bee bots to arrive at specific world wide destinations on a map (linked to Geography).

Key Vocabulary - forward, backwards, left, right, video, algorithm, code, demonstration, pause, clear instructions, explore, explain, controller, judge
