This term’s writing focus is on narrative writing texts. We will be revisiting narrative texts that we wrote earlier in the year and exploring how to edit and rewrite them, using the features and techniques we have developed throughout the year. These writing features include using a wide range of punctuation, varied conjunctions and different sentence openers.

Guided Reading - Reading for Inference
We will use a variety to texts - both fiction and non-fiction - to enable us to apply our learning to a range of question types, and to make links between different books and our own growing general knowledge. We will continue to use text annotation as a method of exploring a text, and will build on our retrieval and inference reading skills. Maths – Negative numbers, converting units and volume
This term we will be learning about negative numbers, converting units and volume. We will be using Number and Lightning as the basis of our knowledge to support our arithmetic skills. Pupils will be taught operations in depth and will be tasked with using these in a variety of different contexts.

Science – Reproduction
Our final Science exploration in Year 5 will about sexual reproduction in animals, linking with our RSE and PSHE learning this term.

My Happy Mind & RSE / PSHE – Safety & the Changing Body & Relate
The focus of our RSE / PSHE learning this term is Safety and the Changing Body. We will be exploring the emotional and physical changes of puberty, including menstruation; learning about online safety, influence, strategies to overcome potential dangers and how to administer first aid to someone who is bleeding.

In the My Happy Mind Relate unit, we will learn how positive relationships help wellbeing and happiness. We will explore kindness, empathy, teamwork, communication, and respectful ways to manage disagreements while building strong friendships and understanding different perspectives.

Geography - Deserts
We will learn about desert environments around the world and explore what it is like to live in a desert. We will investigate climate, physical features, plants, animals and human life in desert regions, while considering the challenges and advantages of living there.

P.E. – Football and Handball
We will have all of our PE lessons outdoors in Summer 2. We will be learning the skills and tactics of Football and Handball. We will also explore tactics within these sports and how they can be interchangeable. Our other focus is on Athletics, practising the events we will participate in at this year’s Sports Day in June.

Computing – Stop Motion
We will be storyboarding ideas, taking photographs and editing to create a video animation. We will continue to learn about online safety through our class assembly time.

Design and Technology - Food
The children will be thinking about where food comes from, and what makes food healthy. They will adapt a traditional recipe and produce a healthy dish of food.

Music – South and West Africa
Our music learning this term will focus on South and West African music. We will learn to sing, play and dance to a traditional song ‘Shosholoza’, which is sung in Ndebele, the language spoken by the Bantu people.
