Summer 2

The children have had an amazing term! We are so proud of all their hard work especially with their reading.

Next term we are beginning our learning journey with a topic entitled ‘Take One Picture’. We will start our topic with a study of Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. Following on from this we will study his painting ‘Starry Night’. We will approach this topic through core stories and science.

English

This term we will focus on Scientific Writing to begin with. We will be planning experiments growing Sunflowers and writing observation. Following on from this we will have a focus on story writing. The children will plan their stories and write about characters and settings. The children will be writing their own Space adventure. They will be learning about adjectives, question marks and exclamation marks and using these in their writing.

Key Vocabulary; exclamation mark, question mark, adjectives, once upon a time, conjunctions.

Science

We will be thinking about scientific principles and making observations. We will be growing plants and observing our findings. The children will plan experiments and write scientifically. They will learn about Methods, Conclusion, Prediction and Diagrams. We will be making detailed observations and measuring growth.

We will follow this with a study of Space. The children will learn the planets and the place of Earth in the Solar System. They will study the moon and its phases. They will cover day and night.

Maths

We will focus on Measurement – Length and Height, Weight and Volume.

We will compare different lengths and heights. The children will begin using non-standard measurements and then introduce the ruler. Following this we will add and subtract length problems. The children will compare mass and measure mass. They will be introduced to capacity and volume.

Key Vocabulary; weight, height, capacity, volume, times, multiply, product, addition and subtraction.

Geography

Introduce symbols for maps and map the school garden. use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their school and its grounds and the key human and physical features of its surrounding environment.

Music

The children will be covering a unit entitled ‘Hey You’.

Hey You! is written in an Old-School Hip Hop style for children to learn about the differences between pulse, rhythm and pitch and to learn how to rap and enjoy it in its original form.

As well as learning to play, improvise and compose with this song, children will listen and appraise other Old-School Hip Hop tunes.

PSHE

The children will be learning how to respond to adults in different situations; distinguishing appropriate and inappropriate physical contact; understanding what to do if lost and how to call the emergency services; identifying: hazards in the home and people in the community who keep us safe.

PE

We will work on keeping our bodies healthy through exercise and healthy food.

We will also look at throwing, jumping, running with links to athletics. The children will make obstacle course and practice standing long jumps and vertical jumps.

Art

The children will be studying the work of Vincent Van Gogh. They will sketch and paint sunflowers. They will paint their own version of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. They will paint sections in detail and put them together to create a jigsaw image. They will be colour mixing Primary and Secondary colours.

Computing

The children will be using creativity and imagination to plan a miniature adventure story and capture it using developing photography skills. Learn to enhance photos using a range of editing tools as well as searching for and adding other images to a project, resulting in a high-quality photo collage showcase
